Upper Mustang Trek

Duration: 19 Days

Step into another world on our Upper Mustang Trek. The terrain that you will traverse is completely otherworldly. Even in terms of landscapes in Nepal, it is one-of-a-kind. The people, the places, the entire trekking experience is of utmost beauty. Upper Mustang gives you the sensation that you are trekking through untouched soil, and into ancient medieval fortifications (which you actually are!). Undoubtedly, the Upper Mustang Trek is one of the best trails in Nepal, and is highly renowned worldwide.

When you think of Himalayan trekking, you probably imagine alpine scenery and rugged mountain peaks. The Upper Mustang Trek has this and much more. Find yourself at peace amidst windswept valleys, centuries-old gompas, and mysterious cave dwellings. Interact with some of the kindest most humble individuals you will ever meet, and feel a sense of unparalleled sense of serenity.

The Upper Mustang trail lies just south of the Tibetan border. For this reason, the residents of the area are of Tibetan descent and practice a form of Tibetan Buddhism. Until semi-recently, it was not allowed for foreigners to enter the area. Still today, Upper Mustang is considered a ‘restricted area,’ meaning that you must pay a hefty price for the permit ($500 USD for 10 days, $50 per day after). However, this beauty of this area cannot be properly put into words. You have to see it to believe it. Upper Mustang lies in the rainshadow of the Himalayas, creating a sublime landscape. If you can foot the entry fee, the Upper Mustang Trek is 110% worth it!

The mystical trail begins in Jomsom, after a lovely flight from Pokhara. From moment you land, you are greeted with incredible views. Start trekking along the Kali Gandaki River to Kagbeni. Pass fertile agricultural fields, which are juxtaposed against the dry, desolate walls of the valley. After days of trekking through the reddish-orange cliffs and rolling brown hills, we arrive to the capital of the medieval Lo kingdom: Lo-Manthang. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, Lo-Manthang has a special vibrance to it. Enjoying the fascination of the monasteries, mani walls, chhortens, and the charming locals. The next day, we take a day hike to ancient cave dwellings of Chhoser and Jhong (not the first of the last of the mysterious caves that we will visit on the journey.

Continue even further into the empty expanse of Mustang through Yara, Luri Gompa, Luri, Tange, and Tetang – an alternative and sparsely route back to Jomsom. Before ending our unforgettable trek, we stop at Muktinath, where there lies a famed temple and pilgrimage destination surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. We take our time on the final stretch to Jomsom, soaking in our last moments in the majestic Himalayas. The trek ends the same way it started, with a flight between the mighty Dhaulagiri and Annapurna peaks.

Book the Upper Mustang Trek all throughout the year. The Upper Mustang Trek is one of the few trails in Nepal that is suitable for trekking all throughout the year. Much of the area lies under the rainshadow of the Himalayas, so even the monsoon season is a spectacular time to trek. If you have any questions, please contact us!
